A Fun Party

Saturday we went to one of Cade's friend's birthday parties.  His friend, Nate, turned 2 and to celebrate his parents, and our friends, LeeAnn and Chris, invited our family and another family to Luisenpark.  Nate and Cade are almost exactly one year apart.  Cade does not have many guy friends so it's nice that he has Nate around to play with.  Nate, Cade, and Peyton had a great time "playing" together.  Or rather Nate enjoyed chasing other people's balls and burning off a lot of energy, while Cade and Peyton hung out near their parents.  I'm sure in another year Cade will be one of the kids running around.  Overall it was a fun day.  Thanks for inviting us!

Goat's Milk vs. Cow's Milk - weaning has begun

Now that Caden is one we are able to give him whole milk. We are not able to get him in for a well baby appointment until the middle of July so I'm unable to ask our doctor several questions I have about nutrition until then. Thankfully I'm a pretty good researcher and have a lot of intelligent friends who can help me out, including those who read my blog.

I am starting the weaning process. I was so happy to make it the first year of giving Caden only breastmilk. Not that there is anything wrong with formula I just really wanted to try and breastfeed him. Honestly, I was happy to make it to six months. Now that we have hit the year mark I'd like to start weaning him completely. Right now I still nurse him three times a day. Morning, before nap, and before bed. I'm working on weaning him from the middle of the day feeding now. I hope to only nurse morning and night after another week or two. Then I'll drop another and then the last one. I read that it's a good idea to go slow so your body can adjust.

We have a good routine right now, thankfully. He goes to bed at 8pm, wakes at 7:30am, and takes a one to two hour nap at 11:30. He goes down easily and our routine is working. I hate to mess up a good thing but I know we can do it. Which by the way, he's been able to sleep through the night on breastmilk since he was 3-4 months old. We put him to bed asleep and he sleeps through the night. Sometimes he wakes up, we hear him, but he puts himself back to sleep. If he wakes up crying or screaming we go in there, change his diaper, rock him, put him back down. Which several books I have read say don't do that. It usually takes all of 10 minutes and has not become a habit. Now that we're using cloth diapers he has stopped crying from a wet diaper in the middle of the night. I'll do a later post of how we're cloth diapering at night. Bottom line, don't let people fool you into thinking that you have to put them down awake or you can't go in there if they wake up crying. Sometimes we put him down when he's partially awake, sometimes he's not. We always kiss him goodnight and say "goodnight" before putting him down. A few weeks ago we started letting him choose stuffed animal to hold while we read to him at night and before bed. I also let him play in his crib some everyday. These tips have helped us. Our thoughts are, he's still young. As he gets older and is able to communicate better we may have to adjust things. Or if he was waking up every night we'd have to adjust things. But for the most part he sleeps through the night without waking us up or fully waking himself up.

Okay, back to the milk topic. I bought organic whole cow milk and organic goat's milk. I have been thinking about it and researching which milk to give him for a while. I wanted to have both on hand for the big day (the day in which I truly want to start weaning him). That day happened to be today. I drank goat's milk as a child for many years. My dad told me that it was a long time before me or my siblings were given cow's milk. My mom was what some would call a health nut. I remember going to a small mom and pop health food store and getting organic foods before it was cool. Also I ate a lot of vegetarian meals as a child because she was a vegetarian. Anyway, since my mom is no longer alive (due to a heart problem she was born with, another reason she watched what she ate), I don't have her to ask questions of why she did what she did. Like everyone, I want to give the best to my child(ren). Therefore, I have to do most of the research on my own. Which is hard to find time when you have a toddler running around.

Some of the research I have found regarding the difference between goat's milk and cow's milk is as follows:

· Nutrient content of goat milk is slightly less than cow milk but goat milk is more digestible because the fat molecules are one-fifth the size of those from cow milk -- making it easily tolerated by those with compromised digestive systems.

· Seventy-two percent of the milk used throughout the world is from goats. It is one-third richer than cows milk but more nourishing and easier to digest.

· Goat milk has no cream separation because of smaller fat molecules.

· Goat milk contains pre-formed Vitamin A in the milk fat that allows it to be readily available for use by the body.

· Goats milk contains a more highly-evolved cholesterol than cows milk, making it more available for absorption to the brain and body. (Cholesterol is essential to the health of the myelin sheaths "white matter" of the nerves in the brain.)

· Goat milk is closer to human milk and is therefore easily accepted especially by those young or frail.

· Goat milk has an alkaline reaction the same as mother's milk. Cow milk has an acid reaction

· Goat milk does not form mucous (phlegm) and is therefore better tolerated by asthmatics and those with allergies.

· Goat milk contains more chlorine, fluorine and silicon than any other domestic livestock. Chlorine and fluorine are natural germicides and fluorine assists in preventing diabetes.

· Goat milk contains 2% curd, which precipitates in the stomach. Cows milk is 10% curd.

· Goats are naturally immune to diseases, such as tuberculosis, and are used in third-world countries to actually cure tuberculosis because of their inherent antibodies.

· Goats milk is tolerated by a compromised /damaged liver because of the smaller fat molecules and it's naturally homogenized.

· Goats milk has the ability to "sweeten" the intestinal tract and assist with constipation.

· Goats milk contains a higher evolved carotene (pro-Vitamin A). Researchers have found this to have cancer preventing properties.

Today I decided to give Caden goat's milk. This is his first livestock milk. He seemed to like it okay. I offered it to him after breakfast, so he wasn't very hungry. Then I offered him goat's milk during his mid-morning snack. He still prefers water but I want him to get used to drinking milk. I was just excited to find organic goat's milk.

Another major reason for me choosing goat's milk over cow's milk is because of the following:

"Goat milk is higher in minerals, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, chlorine and maganese; but it is lower in sodium, iron, sulphur, zinc and molybdenum." For more information see here.

Also...

-There is no antibiotic residues, growth hormones, BST, or other contaminants used on the animals. In addition, the mechanical pasteurization process used for cow's milk releases xanthine oxidase, and enzyme which can create scar damage to the heart and arteries.

-The goat's milk product must meet the same health standards as pasteurized cow's milk.

-Goat milk does not contain the complex proteins that are the main stimulants of allergic reactions to cow dairy products.

-Certain cow milk proteins have properties, which suppresses the immune system. Goat milk does not have these immunosuppressive properties.

-Children on goat's milk have been observed to sleep through the night and remain more satisfied between meals.

-Goat's milk has an alkaline pH, so it does not produce acid in the blood or intestinal system.

-Acidic blood and intestinal pH levels are associated with fatigue, headaches, muscle aches and pains, sore pressure points, excess weight, blood sugar imbalances, and Candida Albicans infections.

-Goat's milk does not stimulate an immune response as cow's milk does, so there is no mucous formed.

-The trace mineral selenium, which is often deficient in the human body, is necessary for its immune modulation and antioxidant properties. It helps control the human immune system and works directly on viruses by preventing reproduction.

-Goat's milk contains the highest source of selenium of any milk (2.5 time more than powdered infant formulas, 35% more than pasteurized cow milk, and more than human breast milk).

-Natural milk contains many bioactive components, which serve to retard the growth of harmful organisms, and to protect the health of the person consuming them. Goat's milk contains the same important bioactive components as mother's milk.

These facts and more can be found here.

The only thing I am conserned about is the smaller amounts of folic acid. Dr. Sears says, "The fact that goat's milk contains less than ten percent of the amount of folic acid contained in cow's milk means that it must be supplemented with folic acid in order to be adequate as a formula or milk substitute for infants and toddlers, and popular brands of goat's milk may advertise "supplemented with folic acid" on the carton." Other than that he supports goat's milk over cow's milk. You can read his article here. I need to check the carton on my goat's milk to see if it's supplemented with folic acid.

I'm curious if anyone else has used or considered giving their children goat's milk. If so, what lead you to decide to give goat's milk instead of cow's milk? I'm not sure how long I will give Caden goat's milk before cow's milk. I have a carton of organic whole milk so I may let him try that now too. I'm not sure. I just thought I'd post my reasons for trying goat's milk first and see if anyone has any thoughts about it one way or another.

I personally drink organic cow's milk. I tried goat's milk this morning but did not like the taste. I also do not like the taste of whole milk from cows. Collin is lactose intolerant and drinks soy milk, another reason we decided to try goat's milk.

Caden's 1st Birthday!

Happy First Birthday Caden!  Today he is one.  I cannot believe a year has passed since Caden was born.  So much has happened in a year.  Collin and I are truly blessed with a wonderful child.  We love him dearly.

We had a birthday party for him yesterday. He had six friends over and their parents for a total of 16 people at our house. All of the kids got along very well. Caden has a very friendly personality and loves playing with and watching other kids. We bought him some play tents for his party with tunnels. The kids enjoyed playing in that and with his other toys. I made him a healthy oatmeal cookie cake and he loved it. I also made peanut butter cookies for people who didn't want the healthy cake and we had ice cream along with strawberries, veggies, cheese, meats, and crackers.  Here are some pictures from his birthday party.

Is this for me?

Yummy, I love Oatmeal Cookie Cake!

Peyton is one of my best friends

David was the only boy who was able to come to my party.  We are just a month a part in age.  We get along great!  Maybe he and his sisters, Maya and Emma, can teach me German.

My Mom loves me!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful gifts!  Come over again and we can play together.

Today I made cupcakes for his birthday and Father's Day. Happy Father's Day Collin! We decided to let Caden have one cupcake without icing. He loved it. Hopefully he will forgot the taste of sugar and never ask for any!  Haha.  I honestly try to only give him healthy foods and don't add salt or sugar to foods he eats. We've been making most of his food this past month. I try and give him at least two servings of veggies and at least 3 servings of fruit a day plus grains and protein.

This past month Caden started walking.  He has been cruising for several months but finally took off a week ago.  We knew he could do it.  He's also amazingly pretty stable.  When a lot of people are around he prefers to hang onto mom or dad but when we're home or there are not a lot of people around he'll walk around the room.  We hope to get a well baby appointment this week.  Once we go we will give you his biometrics.

A year ago I had just given birth to the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.  I was beyond exhausted but had more energy than I ever had in my life, especially on such little sleep.  My world was changed forever.  I became a mom, what I view now as the most important role in my life.  I had a precious child that could not do anything for himself.  It was up to me and Collin to take care of this child and help him grow up.

Sweet newborn

Today.

Now Caden is walking, "talking," and exploring his surroundings.  He laughs and makes us laugh.  He can even feed himself.  Caden has grown up so much this past year and yet still has so much more to learn and more to grow.  He has almost tripled in his weight and I look at his infant clothes with joy as I think back to the days after we brought him home from the hospital and dressed him in his tiny clothes.

Active sweet toddler!

Dear Caden,

We are so blessed to be your parents.  God graciously gave you to us and we love you more than words can describe.  This first year has been fun and we are enjoying raising you.  We are trying to treasure every minute we have with you and we look forward to all the days to come! We love you son, happy first birthday.

Love,
Mom and Dad

28 is not that old

This past week I turned 28.  I used to think 28 was pretty old.  Now it seems young.  I had a great birthday this year.  We kept things pretty low key.  Collin took me and Caden to a wonderful restaurant in Mannheim called Skyline.  It's in a tower overlooking the city.  The top of the tower is shaped like a globe and it revolves around the city just like the Reunion Tower in Dallas.  The food was fabulous.  Collin also bought me beautiful roses and a gift card for a full day at the spa.  I picked myself up an ice cream cake and I also bought a Senseo Coffee Maker.  We have been wanting one for a while.  This past week I met a babysitter so hopefully I can redeem my present soon.

It is strange, I used to be more excited about my birthday.  In fact, Collin used to think I celebrated my birthday twice a year, my actual birthday and my half birthday.  He actually still buys me a cake and card for my half birthday even though my half birthday is close to Christmas.  Now that I'm a mom and knowing that Caden's birthday is just 5 days after mine, I have been more involved planning and preparing for his first birthday party.  I think that is natural.

So much happened last year with the birth of Caden and traveling all over that I hope to have a little more down time this year.  Like always I want to continue deepening my relationship with Christ and try and be the best wife, mother, daughter, friend, and sister I can be.  27 was one of the best years of my life and I plan on 28 being just as good if not better.  I don't want to look back when I'm 80 and say, "remember the good old days?"  I want to make every year good, even though bad and sad things will happen.  Since we don't know how long we will live I think it's important to live each day to the fullest.

Here are some pictures from my birthday.

I love this boy!

Caden loved looking out over the city

I had the Spinach Strudel with mixed veggies, it was delicious!

Collin had the Pork Medalions with mushrooms, spaetzle, mixed veggies, and kohlrabi - it was wonderful too

Luxembourg makes 12!

This post is from Caden's perspective and is mostly taken from his new blog.

Saturday I took my first trip to Luxembourg.  Luxembourg is the 12th country I have visited.  My parents wanted me to experience twelve countries before I was twelve months old.  Thankfully living in Europe makes this pretty easy to do.

I had a great time in Luxembourg.  We visited the Casemates du Bock.  The Casemates are full of mystery.  They were an immense underground military defense system.  To me they looked like giant mountain caves.  I enjoyed walking around and exploring the different tunnels.

Daddy loves Luxembourg because he gets to practice a lot of languages.  We ate lunch at a really good Italian restaurant and one of the workers told us to follow him to the Casemates.  When we got to the Casemates it started raining.  The waiter offered to give us a ride up the hill to the entrance so we wouldn't get wet.  Mommy thought he might hold us for ransom.  The man was from Portugal and mainly spoke Portuguese.  Daddy thought it was safe so we got in a stranger's car.  He was nice and did what he told us he would do, dropped us off at the entrance.  It's nice to know there are trustworthy people in the world.

The Casemates are behind me

Caves and tunnels are fun!

I thought this cannon was pretty cool

Hello world!

Fun at Leimen Tierpark

Today Caden and I went on a play date with some of my friends from MOPS.  We went to the Tierpark (animal park) in Leimen.  The kids had a lot of fun.  There were some goats, deer, and some neat things to play on.  Caden loved feeding the goats until one bit him.  Poor little guy!  Caden also loved seeing some of his friends and being outside.  One of the best things about the park was it was heavily shaded.  Believe it or not it does get really hot in Germany.  It was in the 80s today and unfortuantely we do not have AC except in our bedroom.  We're going to buy three more air conditioners this week.  Our house is hot!  So is every store and restaurant in Germany that doesn't have air conditioning, which is almost everywhere.  I'm just glad I'm not pregnant this summer.

Here are a few pictures from today.

Ireland continued...

Here is the second part of our time in Ireland.

Day 5 - Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, Powers Court, and Bray Head

Today we drove through the Wicklow Mountains to the coastal town of Bray.  On our drive we saw where scenes of several famous movies were filmed such as Braveheart and PS I Love You. We stopped in Glendalough, walked around, saw the monuments: Round Tower, Church, and Cemetery, and then drove to Powers Court, the home of the most beautiful gardens in Ireland. We had a wonderful lunch at Powers Court and spent a few hours in the gardens.  After Powers Court we drove to Bray Head, a touristy beach town.  Caden fell asleep so we decided to drive through Dublin before dinner.

Day 6 - Day in Dublin

We decided to spend our last full day in Dublin. We ate a nice Irish lunch and walked across the Ha'Penny Bridge. We visited some nice bookstores, bought some books in English, and went to Trinity College. Collin saw the amazing library and Book of Kells. I decided not to go in and let Caden play while Collin walked through. We ended our last night in Ireland with a very fancy dinner. I wish I had my camera. The food was not only delicious but very artistic too.

Day 7 - Back to Germany

We went to the airport early this morning and flew back to Germany. We had a great vacation! The Irish people are friendly and the country is beautiful. We'd love to go back some day.
