We are on Week 3, Unit 1 of My Father's World (MFW) Kindergarten. This week we are studying the sun, along with the letter S, and the number 1. We're going through the activities involving the letters and numbers as a refresher and to practice cutting, pasting, and coloring. The Biblical theme that went along with the Sun was Jesus is the Light of the World. The past two weeks were pretty light as far as schooling goes when we were studying Creation. This week has been busier, which I'm kind of glad about. We are also doing Sonlight P4/5 and are enjoying the stories, discussions, and Developing the Early Learner from that.
Verse of the week: 2 Corinthians 9:7: God loves a cheerful giver. (RSV). Generosity: I share my things with a cheerful spirit.

Here is how week 3 went.
Day 1: Started our day with Sonlight: memory verse - 2 Corinthians 9:7, character trait - generosity, and read-alouds. He started with the picture cards: cut out some pictures, colored them, and told me what letter each picture started with. We talked about the letter "s" and the two sounds it makes ("ssss" and "zzzz") and did a Wordy Worm page.
Day 2: Today he started with free play. I haven't started setting out extra activities yet. However, he can easily access most of the games and toys. He started off beading and making knots. He put a knot between each bead, a nightmare for this Mama to fix but I was quite impressed. After he worked on his tying and knot skills, we read our Bible story, memory verse, Sonlight read-alouds, handwriting practice, picture box, sound discrimination, stamping (his choice), and started our grape to raisin experiment. We talked about upcoming holidays and he told me he wanted to be an egg for Halloween. So I made my first costume, an egg! He also played with play doh and did some extra cutting later in the day.

Day 3: Today we started with MFW. He really loves hands-on activities. This was a busy day! We started with the calendar (which we do everyday), 100 chart, our songs, math page, a dot paint page, and cut and paste page. Then Caden painted a sun with some sidewalk paint on our back patio. He painted for a while and loved it! I think he'll be painting with this paint a lot more in the future. He enjoyed mixing the colors and making new colors. Then we did our Bible reading, memory verse, and Sonlight readers. After lunch he made his first badge, the sun, we laminated it and put a magnet on the back. He colored a rainbow and stayed in the lines better than I've ever seen him. We also watched a little too much Dinosaur Train, a new show he just discovered yesterday. I got about 2 hours of sleep last night so I was exhausted today! We had a pot luck at church tonight and he enjoyed seeing his church friends.

Day 4: Today we had a lot of fun. We did our daily work, memory verse, read-alouds, etc. But we also made a sundial! I had never done this before and for two days we watched where the shadow went and marked the sun's location on our sundial at various times. This morning we went to our church's co-op group and Caden got to play with a few of his friends. I'm so excited about the pre-K/kindergarten homeschool group at church. This evening we had some missionary friends over for dinner, whom I found out also homeschool. The dad is from the Philippians and they do a lot of work there. We showed him our garden tower and he thinks the people in the Philippians can make something like it and it will help them with their food supply. Caden loves having people over and was excited to make their daughter a surprise and show her his sundial and grape/raisin experiment.

Day 5: Fridays are lighter days. We did the 100 chart, memory verse, Bible reading, and stories but we didn't have any huge experiments. Right now we have two things we're watching so I think that's plenty. He did a drawing page where he had to think of 4 things that started with "s," draw a picture of them, and then write "s." He started out pretty well with a sun, then drew a snake, then a spoon that looked kind of like balloons he likes to draw, then he wrote the number 6. He did this out of order but as long as he tried, I was fine with him started in box 4. Then we went outside and drew with chalk, we checked his grapes, and sundial. He built the letter "s" in his alphabet book using the rods and created other things that start with "s" as well. Then we met some friends for lunch at Chick-Fil-A. One friend's daughter is a month younger than Caden. They play very well together. My other friend has 4 girls, 2 older, and 2 younger. They all had fun. After 2 hours of play and lunch, we came home and finished our school work. We had another book to read, about how houses are built and who and how many people are involved. Then we worked on listening skills and following directions. Tonight we'll do our last activity with Collin. We're going to take a flash light and our globe and go to a dark room and shine the light on where we live. Then we'll rotate the globe and show how the sun rotates around the earth and demonstrate day and night around the world. It was another busy but fun week!
