Marc Cox preached a good sermon on the birth of Christ yesterday morning at church. As we are all preparing for Christmas I thought I would share with you something that he reminded me of.
Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)
8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
One of the neatest things that happened on the night that Christ was born was that an angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds. Out of all the people in the world, the angel appeared to shepherds! Why is this significant? Because the shepherds were just ordinary people and these ordinary people are some of the first to learn about the birth of Christ. Coincidentally, most of us are just ordinary people. God sent Christ to die for everyone including ordinary people. Another interesting fact, Jesus' disciples were ordinary people who helped change the world by spreading the gospel. Today, ordinary people still spread the gospel. You don't have to be gifted or talented to share in God's glory, that is the beauty of being a child of God. God calls us to come to Him just as we are.
