We woke up Saturday morning to a white Valentine's Day. The snow was beautiful. It continued to snow through Monday. Many people in our area have said this is one of the whitest winters they have seen in this part of Germany in a long time. Being from Texas snow that sticks to the ground is new to us unless we are vacationing in the mountains during winter. We have enjoyed driving around watching the snow fall. Collin has also done an excellent job shoveling snow from our driveway which I think is something he used to only dream of doing - being that he grew up in the desert where it rarely even rains.
We had a wonderful weekend. Monday was President's Day so we took a day trip to Darmstadt and ate at the old Ratskeller (Town Hall Cellar). We decided to celebrate Valentine's Day on this day rather than Saturday. The restaurant was recommended in one of our Germany Day Trip books. It was about a 45 minute drive and we drove through snow the whole way. After driving about 20 minutes I asked Collin if we should turn around. That's the Texan in me questioning if it's safe to be on the autobahn during a snow storm. If the weather was like it was Monday in Texas most schools and businesses would be closed for a snow day and only the brave would be on the roads. Snow days are rare in Germany, I heard the trucks out at 6am Monday morning shoveling the snow from our street. When the sun is out the snow melts a little bit but Monday the snow was not out and the temperature stayed below freezing. I was afraid that it would continue snowing the whole time we were gone and we would be stuck in Darmstadt or on the side of the road. We talked about turning around but decided to continue with our plans. We thought with as many cars on the road it would keep the snow on the autobahn from sticking. After lunch we walked in part of the castle in town which is now a college. It was too cold to stay outside very long so after a little exploring we decided to head home. We took a few pictures and would like to dedicate them to our friends in Texas. May you see snow this year even if you have to drive out of State to see it.
